Buddy blew up the rear diff in his Disco a while back. Somehow the center pin completely sheared, clean break. The bottom spider gear fell out and the top one stayed in place. He drove the Disco for weeks after this, it was still functional enough. Finally ended up giving up the ghost at the end of a trail ride a month or so ago and it's sat torn apart in his driveway since.
I was over there yesterday pulling the motor out of a 92 Chevy and got to looking at what he had. He had mentioned welding the gears in his replacement diff before installing it. I said, hell brother, we can weld that one up! It's already f*cked, you can't f*ck it any worse.
So here's what we did. Feast your eyes, fellas. This is some top teir rigging up. Take a peek at those ring gear teeth. We slammed her back together while I was there and she's back on the road! Doesn't even make any noise.
Don't judge my welding by these welds, we did this with a $75 110v flux core machine. Didn't even have voltage control.
Just curious, DiscoJunction, your location says Junction City, OR but on the side of your truck it says "Caribbean Rover Expedtions".
Are you in Oregon or are you somewhere in the Caribbean? Is there a story?
I live in Junction City, Oregon. I bought the Discovery from the previous owner who bought it in Costa Rica. It had been used in jungle tours there. It has G4 edition badging on the drivers side and on the hood. I’m rebuilding the safety devices Safari rack that came with it too. There’s some rust on a few places but the rest of the vehicle was pretty cared for.
I pulled my engine and found out why it sounds like a diesel and likely why the oil light was on. It's a testament to how cramped everything is on the front of the engine that after power washing under the hood and pulling it in the garage I didn't notice any water in the oil.
I was confused when the seller stated "the water pump blew up" and I could find no such damage on the water pump. I guess he was confused on what had blown up.
All is well. I wasn't planning on using the Rover engine anyway. It's just funny considering how much I've ran this thing that it didn't lock up. The flex plate or what I guess is the flex plate was in nice shape also. It's been an interesting few days. The grind marks by the bolt hole are from me cutting one of the bolts off. The cracks I believe were there before.
Fitted new front hubs as three amigos paid a visit and on inspection found the driver side hub had some play two hours and both changed just need the lights turning off now 🤦♂️ Back on the road
