Finally got around to painting and installing my camping essentials on my rear door. I'm still debating if I want to add a water faucet on there but that may be a bit of overkill.
just did a 1,700+ mile trip in my lifted '04. pushed the odometer over 200,000 in one of my many jaunts from our hotel in Charleston to Folly Beach. now only one of the four Rovers is under the 200,000 mark. and it has the roughest exterior of them all.
truck ran flawlessly the entire time. a well-sorted Discovery with Cruise Control for the long empty spaces and a 4.6 for passing is a joy to drive on the freeway. not as nice as the P38. but, still fun.
on the way back home to the Midwest we did a little detour through the Smoky Mountains. beautiful place in the spring and because it was midweek there was little other traffic.
did use 2nd gear quite a bit driving up and down the mountain switchbacks.
while Smoky Mountain National Park is beautiful and at times in the misty fog, a bit otherworldly, i'm pretty sure that Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are proof of the theological concept of Hell.
perhaps a bit on the nose, but there seems to be a metaphor somewhere in our descent from the heavenly heights of the Smokies to the depths of corporate kitsch and crass caricature of Appalachian Mountain culture of those two towns that pander to the nostalgia for a past that never was.
averaged 14+ mpg over the course of the entire trip driving 80-85 mph with the A/C on. i know this doesn't sound great but with a 2" lift, 31" tires, a steel front bumper, two adults, two kids and all our luggage, i'm pretty happy. i guess i'll treat the Rover to an oil, oil filter and air filter change this coming weekend.
I usually come to this page for mechanical information but your post sent me off on a google search that exposed me to Dollywood and cable cars.... Still looks beautiful but hot (this Albertan taps out a 72 degrees). Pretty good gas mileage too, considering the mountains. I have always wanted to get to Nashville to see the Preds play and if I do, I may have to see this area for the spectacle of it all .
Used the 1/4"-20 heli coil kit that they luckily had in stock at local Ace. Made sure to tape paper towel around hole to prevent aluminum shards from entering valve area.
Lots of being careful to keep drill straight and tapping the hole well. Did it without a tap handle. Used pliers to turn it.
Tried to punch off tang at bottom of heli coil like instructions say but it bent instead of breaking off. So now I need a bolt that doesn't quite reach end of heli coil insert because I do not want to re-do the damn thing.
Not so much what I did for my Disco but my friend bought a Puma unlock code for €62 ($64) to add to my Nanocom for his 2009 Defender. We both agreed to the terms if he bought the code he can borrow my Nanocom with the blue OBD lead. Win-win situation for both parties.
Sorry to make another post but I have to come on here to say that - after many, many weeks of working on it after/during work and school - I finally finished the head gasket job on our 1999 D2. No garage, no driveway. Worked on it on the street outside the house that luckily isn't too busy. Just took it around the block and no check engine, all looks good so far. Don't want to get carried away celebrating yet.
Also making this post to thank everyone on this forum who contributed information - old and new - that was so helpful. Also thank you to Atlantic British for making the head gasket videos that shows everything you need to do from start to finish. Huge thank you to Terry Penniket at WO Bentley Repairs in Royal Oaks, CA. He told us we could do the job ourselves to save the money and told us everything, gave us his spare tools without our asking, and refused to take any cash as a thank you. Really good man. If you need service in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area, look him up. He is cheap and very experienced and does an amazing job. Used to be service manager at the dealer in Monterey. And he's British so we have to trust him. We also texted him several times about concerns and he talked us off the cliff.

Congratulations. You have more chutzpa that I would have had. No garage and no driveway. And good for Terry Penniket for being a standup guy.
You should maybe try to meet up with Brandon318. He's active on this forum and must live not too far from you.
There's a guy here in Charlotte, active in this forum, who swapped the engine in his DII in a gravel lot a block from where he lives. I'll respect his privacy and not name him here, but ... Amazing.
Someone Saturday night came through and cleaned out the green disco and RRC cats....white one is straight piped from an earlier attempt earlier this year. Ordered 2 sets of the CARB compliant (yay CO wants to be like cali....) universal cats from Autozone which hopefully arrive sooner than later this week so I can either weld them up myself or have a shop close to the house do it if there prices aren't out of control.
