Default Which RR to buy?

I am sure there has been multiple threads such as this one but after doing some research, I am still confused. I really like the looks of the range rover hse and I am currently at the point where I need a new suv for winter/long trips. Debated the gl350 bluetec for a bit but prices for them are still sky rocketing. My concerns arent necessarily with gas prices but mainly a reliable suv that is comfortable to drive long distances. Though I also dont want an suv that gets single digit mpgs either... maybe you owners could chime in your avg mpg and hwy mpg as well? Anyway, I am looking for a newer jag v8 RR since I heard they are more reliable and the reason why I got rid of my 745Li earlier this year was because it needed valve cover gaskets and a slew of other things that racked in 8k worth of parts and labor so I got rid of it with 140k miles. I am hoping the jag v8 will last a bit longer before a slew of problems (maybe 150k ) So with that in mind, I guess my idea is to get something between 06-08 maybe shell out a few more bones for an 09 if its worth it? Can you guys tell me the main differences between the models and which one I should be looking for? Right now I have my eyes set on an 08 with 55k miles for 38k listed at a dealership but I am open to older models if itll be cheaper and there arent any major changes between the years? Also, what should I be looking out for within these various yrs of models? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You can spread out your search with www.statewidelist.com, which you can use to search all Rovers for sale in one state, sorted by city, you spec the price range, dealer vs. private seller, etc. It sorts the craigslist database. Older units with 4 liter are like 14 - 15 mpg.

My personal advice would be to avoid the Bluetecs like the plague. We had a GL320CDI for a while. I hated everything about it. We bought it to replace our 2003 Yukon XL Denali that had 180,000 miles. Nobody liked driving the Mercedes because it was uncomfortable, the handling was vague and squirrely, the seats were uncomfortable, and the transmission never knew what gear to be in. It had horrible blind spots, the head lights were the worst of any car I've ever driven(including original Minis, '60s Volvos, etc.), and the stereo sucked. The final nail in the coffin? It randomly started dieing while driving. You'd be driving along and it would just shut off with no warning. The cam position sensor was the cause. On that engine it's located just above the exhaust manifold, and the heat kills it. Ours went through four before we finally threw in the towel because we hated it and no longer trusted it. I can't complain completely, because we owned it for 8 months, put 10,000 miles on it, and sold it for the exact same price we bought it for. But it was a horrible, hateful, and terribly designed vehicle. I love Mercedes, and we've owned several. They used to be world-class. They are now probably the worst car currently made in terms of quality and engineering. I'd put Kia above the new Mercedes any day. The end of the story? The Denali that it was supposed to replace now has 260,000 miles and is running like a top. I can't comment on the new Range Rovers, as I only have my '90, but I can tell you, avoid the GL's at all costs.

thank you for your input, I am probably going to avoid the gl regardless because it is out of my price range atm (just bought a new car and need a decent/nice beater for the winter) Most likely I will be getting a 07-08 range rover hse but I also have been looking at getting a supercharged considering they seem to get the exact same mpg with 100 more hp... It seems like 07s hse with 30k miles are going for 40-45k and the supercharged are going for 47-50k. Is the supercharged any more reliable or less reliable than the non supercharged? would it be worth the few extra bones for the sc over na? I really need ppls opinions on my options soon as I am looking to buy this weekend/next week. Basically looking for a cheap 07-08 sc or na with around 30k miles on it. Whats the price range I should be wanting if I got it from a dealer? Anything I should look out for?

I don't have a bunch of answers, being a one-week new owner of a 2009 Sport, na...(and also leaving a BMW behind).

We looked for a while, trying to decide between 07s-09s, and driving the SC rig as well...As far as diffs, my understanding that very little changed between these years other than colors, clear back and side lenses, and body colored rear strips (above the bumper) - all taking place in 09.

As a reference point, we paid $47.5K for ours. It had 27K miles on it, lux, and 20" tires/wheels. This last option was a $4K bump when new (we have the sticker), and I really think these wheels make the vehicle look much more aggressive...

The SC was a hoot to drive and I started to gravitate towards it as time went on. However, we really wanted to keep the miles at or below 30K, and the price for one of these was going to be low $50s, so we passed...fun though.

Not sure this helps much, but no complaints so far!

Some of my thoughts: I purchased a 2006 RR HSE a few months ago with 46,000 miles for $31,000. It has the supercharged grill, vents, taillights, and rims, as well as the head rest dvd screens, and updated wood package (wood steering wheel, all of that). I originally was looking at the supercharged full size, but after speaking with a few people who owned them, I changed my mind. From what I hear, the supercharger just adds another piece of equipment that can break and be a fortune to repair, and more importantly, the SC has those massive Brembo brakes. Brake jobs are not only much more expensive, but it apparently eats through the brake pads requiring frequent brake jobs. Also, and less importantly, a lot of the supercharged ranges that I looked at had the black veneer trim, which I am not crazy about. Anyways, your questions about the jaguar engine. So far so good for me, it drives incredibly well, plenty of power and pickup, tows my 23 ft. boat easily. As for milage, I have been astounded. I was expecting 12 mpg city and 18 highway, but according to the onboard computer, I am getting about 21.9 mpg on the highway and 20.5 in the city. I drive reasonably efficiently, but nothing out of the ordinary. Either the computer onboard is lying to me or the truck is doing much better than expected. Good luck in your search, and feel free to ask any more questions, I'll try to help if I can.

2007 to 2009 models HSE were really good and had lots of bugs fixed.
Same with the sports. Supercharged engines weren't too expensive to fix but we had mostly issues with repgms on ecus and the like. Continental tires sucked on all models but the michelins worked excellent. I have seen many hse with 19 in michelin tires last almost fifty thousand miles.
