Cool abs issue?

ok, so I'm having an issue…when i depress my brake petal, it feels as if the abs is engaging…ya know it makes the bumping… it only does it about half the time…but its slightly annoying because i know it shouldn't do that for one, and for two…it doesn't stop as it should because its thinking the tires are slipping i suppose…anyways i would like to fix the issue if i could but i don't know where to even start with it. Also my abs light comes on here and there…but its not exactly…consistent i suppose..anyways, any help or idea's would be appreciated.

You don't mention which vehicle and year, so I will assume discovery one as I had the same problem.

The ABS pump only engages when the light is not on?

And when're light is on there are no braking issues?

The easy go around is to disable the ABS, remove the ABS fuse under the hood and under the dash.

The light will always be on, but no more ABS pump engagement.

Another thing you can try before that is to take off each wheel and systematically tap the sensors down as far as they will go. This is sometimes the issue as the air gap is too wide.

Besides that, you have to read the codes to know exactly. Check the sticky section in D1 for the paper clip or wire jumper method.

Specify your vehicle and you will get better results.

oh shoot my opologies, it is a 97 discovery 1
i took it to AutoZone last night to have the codes on it pulled…the only one it did pull up was a P1496 which is an issue with the fuel system which i quickly figured out because i just did some work to it..but nothing for the abs which i felt to be kind of weird. so i think your on to something, i'll try to tap them all down? and if that doesn't work then yes, i will just disconnect the ABS…not really a big fan of it anyways…just more crap to go wrong with the vehicle anyways lol

A regular Scanner at Autozone won't tell you ABS codes, you need a Land Rover specific scanner for that.

Here is the link to the "blink" procedure of reading codes.

Good luck

hey thanks i will give it a go..but if it doesn't work, I'm not sweating the fact of not having abs..this will be only the 2nd vehicle i have owned with it..thank you for reading and responding. I have another question for ya…my doors won't stay locked…and my back hatch door or what ever you call it won't open without the key in and turned…could my back door be the issue for not letting the doors lock? it would be nice not to have to put the key in to open the back door since the keys are kinda…flimsy…I've broken not one but three in a year…but i had like 6 made when the first one broke…cuz i can't not have a key ya know?

The back door not unlocking except with the key is due to a lazy spring inside the lock mechanism.

As far as the rest not staying locked, I would need more info.

It sounds like there is an issue with your driver door lock assembly that is not allowing it to stay in lock position so the rest of the locks unlock. I think I had this problem on a 96, and if I recall I took the lock assembly apart and did some adjustment. Just can't remember exactly what I did.

Take the driver door panel off and do some detective work.
