Advice on Head / Valve work Disco 1 4.0
In the shed is 96/97 Discovery 1 with 4.0 California Engine with approx 180K miles. I'm familiar with Mechanical work, and have replaced the fuel pump, steering box, Coils, wires, plugs, oil, filters, many misc parts; however would like advice on what can I afford to do to possibly get another 100K miles out of the rover.. i Know...
it started running rough, stumbling; It had lost compression in Cyl 8, I took it to a LR shop in Santa Cruz and was quoted $2700 to fix it. To shorten the story, as it also has brake issues, I opened it up hoping not to find the horror stories of slipped Cylinder walls, warped overheated head, etc.
So to my untrained eye. the pictures seem to show the head gasket blew between cylinder 8 and 7. No bent rods seen, lots of CRUD in the engine valley, not sure of lifter condition. crud in what I assume to be the coolant pathway.
Notes: the original owner is a British car enthusiast and appears to maintain his other jags, and Healeys well, and the Disco ran reasonably well, not lots of power compared to my Toyota 4runner, about 13MPG usually, and generally always needing TLC.
Any suggestions or things I'm not seeing, or should check for while it's open.
I'd planned on locating a good head shop in Campbell,CA or area nearby to take the heads and pushrods into to get advice as well. Kaeding racing did a set for me 10 yrs ago, but doesn't do them any more.
Thanks in Advance.

well he may have taken care of the jag, but not the rover.
your leak is between 6&8 not 7&8, the head gasket does not hold any water between 6&8. so i fear you have a crack behind the 6 or 8 liner, it also looks as if it was leaking for quite some time.
if there is any type of grove that you can feel with your finger nail on the head or block the may not be re-usable.
