You may not get many replies from this site since virtually none of us have diesels in the States,

Your fuel system has a leak and you are getting air in the fuel system, cranking the engine over for a long time will eventually purge the air out of the system.
Unlike a petrol engine a diesel cannot have any air in the fuel system as the fuel is injected directly into the cylinders under 30,000psi.
If air gets into the injector pump then you really are in trouble because then you need to bleed the injector pump of air, and then the fuel lines.
So you need to find your fuel leak, either fuel is leaking backwards out of the system or through the injectors into the cylinders.
Does it smoke really bad when you start it after sitting?
Does it fire and run for a second or 2 after it has sat?
Does it spit and sputter for a min after sitting?
Or does it just crank and crank and crank until it finally starts?

Hi Mike,
thank you very much for your help it does smoke a lot when it starts. It just cranks but wont fire. maybe when the fuel pump & pressure regulator were changed something happened causing a fuel leak. It will start immediately if it has just been running but if left for more than 30 mins it is unwilling and has deteriorated to the point where it wont start at all.... whereas before with the accelerator down it would start. Once it is going it is faultless!! Someone mentioned the plug from the fuel injector wires to the computer might have oil on it too causing a computer malfunction? Will look into theposibility of a fuel leak straight away. thanks again

Yes, diesels are few and far between in the States, and with our election just over, gas prices will rise again. Diesel is already at $4 a gallon near me, and petrol at $2.99 (last week).

With it smoking alot when you start it your fuel injectors are probably leaking fuel into the cylinders, it smokes because the extra fuel is being burned off.
It could also be a wiring issue, start there.
We have a truck at work that was hard to start after sitting all night, it was not getting any fuel because of a wiring issue, it would eventually start and smoke really bad.
Fixed wiring issue, no problems since.

Must be nice, diesel has not been below $4.09 or petrol below $3.50 (regular) for over a month here.

The oil companies were waiting for the election to be over, so they could raise prices and start funding more politicians. I don't know if Demoncrats are pricer than Republicants; but I'm proud that we have the finest politicians money can buy!
