Exclamation 08 LR2 electrical nightmare

My wife has been driving her LR2 (80k) for the past four months and has encountered a number of unpredictable electrical shutdowns while driving. She receives random HDC faults, along with the occasional loss of power to the radio and NAV head interior lights etc. This can occur on a regular basis and or every 3-4 weeks. When the power loss to the radio is about to occur the dash beeps 3 times. Most recently, the car has been driven and once turned off the loss of power occurs trapping the key fob in the slot. The car will not start nor can the keys be pulled out. Lots of fun when you are parked in the bus lane at your kid's school! Anyways it seems to be getting worse. It has been to the dealer twice, no luck. I have checked for error codes - none reported. They report the battery and alternator are fine. I tell them I suspect a loose ground or cable as the culprit but that is ignored. We have owned the car for 8 years with no real problems. It truly has been great as well as our LR3 but this is starting to get dangerous. Any insight is appreciated. TIA!

Which OBD2 codes are you getting?

Tyler,

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.

I also have a 2008 LR2 and it becomes unhappy when the battery is getting old.

I am on my third battery (counting the one that came with my LR2).

If it were me I would ignore the dealer and just get a new battery.

1) New Battery

Then make sure that the new battery is fully charged before you install it.

And its also a good idea to hold the positive lead and negative lead together to get the system completely discharged (after doing this you will need reset the sunroof and windows)

The next thing that I would look at is the Relays that send the power to the starter motor solenoid and to the cabin

2) New Relay R1 & R2 & R7

Take a look at this link

https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...ine-off-83670/

Here is the replacement Relay that I bought

2008 LAND ROVER LR2 3.2L L6
AIRTEX / WELLS 1R2395 Accessory Power Relay $ 3.08

2008 LAND ROVER LR2 3.2L L6 Accessory Power Relay | RockAuto

The next thing that I would do is to replace all of the Mini fuses, an intermittent contact can cause electrical gremlins

3) New Mini Fuses

They are not expensive

Amazon Amazon

Take a look at the picture of the fuse in this thread if your fuses looks like that then it time for new fuses (I think that the sulfuric acid from the battery attacked the Zinc plating)

https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...se-help-78491/

The next thing that I would do is to look into replacing the starter motor.

4) New Starter motor for LR2

here is what I bought for mine

Land Rover BOSCH Starter LR029180

The starter motor gets old and it starts consuming too much power which drops the voltage during cranking and cause electrical gremlins.

Just four easy steps
1) New Battery
2) New Relay R1 & R2 & R7
3) New Mini Fuses
4) New Starter motor for LR2

It it were me I would start there and see if the problem persists

Good Luck

Paul

Tyler,

For reference here is the history for my LR2 with respect to electrical gremlins

2008 - Bought LR2 new (no issues)
2009 - no issues
2010 - Some error messages (fixed under warranty, software I think)
2011 - no issues
2012 - Original battery dies, can't start engine or remove key, relays clicking for over an hour (low voltage condition causes complete loss of instrument cluster and navigation)
Replaced battery (covered under warranty, reimbursed by dealer)
All gremlins went away after hard reset (holding battery leads together) and new battery
2013 - no issues
2014 - no issues
2015 - no issues (replace fuses and relays proactively)
2016 - no issues
2017 - Starter motor failed, replacement battery failed, when battery failed I got a warning that my adaptive HID light were not working properly, it was just a voltage issue due to a failing battery
2018 - nothing so far

All things considered my LR2 has been very reliable.

Good Luck

Paul

Thank you for the great info. Definitely gonna bolster up the electrical end of this vehicle over the next few months. After sending the car to the dealer twice with no solution even after requesting that they look at the battery connections and grounds it appears the local indy found the problem. 2 years ago my wife stopped into an Autozone after her battery had been struggling to start. They replaced it right there. The salesman did not tighten the positive lead and over time has only gotten loser. This apparently is the problem that manifested into this intermittent issue with losing power. Fingers crossed, I hope we have a check in the box! Overall the vehicle has been great and hope this is a non issue.

Tyler,

That is great news.

if you run to anymore problems post here and I'll try to help if I can.

One last thing that occurred to me on your comment about "Parked in a bus lane"

If the engine is cranking but not starting then I do have a recommendation.

Never shut off the engine and leave the key docked.

You can read about it in the link below

What you are looking for is my solution #5

"5. Stopped allowing the car to hot soak with the key docked (If I do my LR2 will run rough and misfire unless I shut it off and undock the key and complete the normal starting process) Note: I didn't fix this problem I just stopped doing the behavior that caused it."

https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...se-help-78491/

If you want to confirm if you are susceptible to the hot soak problem then do the following

1. drive you LR2 for 30 minutes or more

2. turn off the engine but don't remove the key

3. wait 15 minutes and then press the start button

4. allow engine to idle for 10 minutes or drive it a short distance (note: the engine may stall after you drive it a short distance, be careful)

For mine if I do this the engine won't start. (or if it does start it will misfire and stall)

I think its due to a bad check valve in the fuel pump

But I am not replacing the entire fuel pump due to a problem that never happens as long as you remove the key.

If you do try this please post your results here I am interested to know your findings.

Good Luck

Paul
