Front crank oil seal -- how bad a job?
So... I might have this job in my future. How bad is this on a LR3? I've done it on the AJV8 motor in its Jaguar form, and the job was not fun given the torque numbers involved (in the Jaguar implementation, the crank pulley bolt is on there with something like 357 foot pounds of torque... I needed like a 4 foot cheater bar to get it off).
I did the crank seal as part of my VVT gear replacement. It was relatively painless compared to the rest of the job, but I had the timing cover fully removed. My crank bolt came loose with a 1/2 drive Dewalt cordless impact, but I also had the radiator and condenser coil out of the way for direct access. I do have the crank holding tool which was important on install. Also, according to the seal manufacturer, install it dry on the crank. The teflon seal material apparently needs to be dry for proper mating with the crank. Mine has been dry for 30k plus miles and close to 3 years.
