LR3 Transmission refresh - my experience
Hi peoples
So my new-to-me LR3 was super cheap because of a transmission fault ie. it would only sometimes engage reverse...that's it. Sometimes it would think about rolling forward but not really.
So I had it shipped and job 1 was the solenoid change/refresh. Upon removing the shields I found lots of oil all over. Drained the transmission and got maybe 2 liters max! And the drain plug was finger tight! Was tempted to just fill it and try it, but I had all the parts so...
Several youtubes out there were very helpful and I had no surprises except...that damn connector sleeve! Man that has to be pushed in hard to allow the fork to lock it in. I was concerned about deforming the plastic while levering it in. If I were to do it again I think I would make some kind of wooden plug to push it in.
I cut a torx bit down so I didn't have to raise the assy to get the pan bolts out. A fiddle but not that bad.
The engine was leaking oil as well. I assumed it was the LH Valve cover but turned out to be the oil filler tube. What an easy fix, and only 25 CAD at the dealer!
More jobs scheduled but so far so good. Going to burn off some fuel then change the gas tank shield. Looks straight forward.
Lesson learned...the dealer is not ALWAYS more expensive for parts. The tank shield and the filler tube were cheaper there than on-line.
Best to all
