Default Tcase leaking

Hi-

I noticed a few drips of oil in the driveway. So I decided to look at it while I had the skid plates off to change the oil. The skid plates are dry. It looks like the oil is coming from where the case splits. Is this a common lead area? I wasn’t sure if it is coming from somewhere else and running there. Did anyone pull the transfer case on one of these? Curious how hard/time it takes to remove.

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks! I thought I read that some where that you needed to take the exhaust down. That’s not to bad.

how hard is it to split the case? Looks like that’s where it’s leaking from.

Thanks again,
Joe

No clue on splitting, I have not done so yet. Before you dive into this, I would clean everything really well and verify the leak location. Liquids like to move about, especially hot liquids. You just want to be sure its not the trans output seal, etc. If it really is the transfer case, you can always pick one up for fairly cheap. I see them go for less than $300, some less than $200. Then you can bench rebuild and take your time. Then you just have to swap em. Unless the downtime of the truck does not matter.

I guess I could do that. I find it hard to believe the case is leaking between the two 1/2’s but maybe? It’s only got 79k miles on it. That’s where it looks like it is. I’ll have to investigate more.

Thanks,
Joe

I'd check the threads on the drain hole too.

Aluminum case and steel plug with no steel insert means the threads can VERY easily get stripped out if it was overtightened. Once they strip the plug may stay in place but fluid will seep out from it
