Going to replace my thermostat tonight. Will I lose much coolant in the process? Can I just replace my thermostat and top off the coolant or should I go ahead and do a coolant flush too?

Heading on a 18 hour road trip Sunday and need to get this taken care of prior.

 

were you able to do the job with the coolant flush? from what I've read, coolant should be flushed while you're in there.

i was looking into replacing the thermostat, too, but given my limited workspace, lack of set up to flush coolant, and limited mechanical skills, i'm leaving this project for the shop.

 

I recently did ours but did boot flush since it only has 50k miles coolant still looks new

Be sure you get a silica and phosphate free Dex cool, will say it on jug somewhere

To answer your question: Yes you can!
I did my thermostat and housing, and after install, just topped it off and went throught the bleeding protocols.

 

Be careful with the t bleeder screw. That thing will crumble. I managed to piece together a brass unit for under $30.

Thanks!! I will get these before I make the change. I did the 2700 mile roundtrip to Phoenix with no issues. Didnt change anything out prior. Was funny because I cleared the code before I left on my trip. No codes were thrown. The day after returning I get the code for the thermostat. LOL.

 

I had the shop I go to do this job. Gotta get me some tools, patience, and a decent workspace...
