Well...I'm more diligent than privileged. I saved up for the LR3 for years. I knew I wanted a Rover I just didn't know that it would be an LR3 because they didn't exist at the time. When it came around, I had a sizeable down payment and it was earmarked for it, so I just closed my eyes and wrote a check.
Also, I tend to keep cars a really long time so I can sort of rationalize the extra cost of buying a vehicle brand new. In my mind, anyway! It works out; the LR3 is a part of our family and "he" will never be replaced. The Rover just seems to get better and better; it's not quite classic but certainly iconic at this point.
I hated the LR3 when it came out. I have had to eat a bit of crow on that one....
I have to admit I'm not sure how much more technology I can handle. I'm a bit more afraid of the systems moving past the LR3 with the LR4 and D5.
The older I get, the more I want less, and less technology in a car. I feel I spend 95% of my time on a computer/phone, why get into a car and have to stare at screens. My family is the opposite. Granted, they all lease cars, so they do not think about how much electric issues can cost you, especially on a 10+ year old car. Engines/transmissions are not usually the issues, electrical stuff is.
I think the LR3 gets it just about right with the mix of mechanical and electrical. If anything it's a bit too electronic in the 4x4 system with the EAS and such and it could be more "connected" on the interior, but mostly it's a sweet spot. Plus it still has a frame and lockers and a big V8. Last of the finest in the LR3 and (early) LR4s.
We also bought an Infiniti Q50S a few years ago and like you guys allude to, I opted to spec it out more raw. No electronic nannies or any of the options that take control away from the driver. Also got it in RWD and boy is that thing fun to drive.
I do wish I had a locker, on mine, and the bluetooth module but that is really about it. In the end though I will just add a ARB air locker some day and be happy.
The locker is nice, but from what I hear the unlocked ones can do most (if not all) of what the locked ones can do; maybe the locked LR3s just do it a tad easier. I do wish I had bluetooth....but again I have it on the Infiniti and I've used it maybe 4 times in as many years.
So about 4 years ago I bought my 06 LR3 V6 with 74k on it for $10,995. Most repairs was just maintenance. I changed the lower control arms, tie rods (inner, outer) complete tuneup, fluids including transmission service, power steering, tranfer case and diffs with oe fluids, starter, egr valve, crankshaft pulley, idler pulley, and tensioner. All in the years. Its a great truck. No speed demon. Just make sure you use oem bulbs. Some how aftermarket can reek havoc on the electric system. Also grab the gap iid tool and keep a spare brakelight switch with you.
Like they said just fix whats need to be fix. I also into land cruisers. I also have a FJ62. Just drive it and enjoy
