Default $250 oil changes? Help

Hi guys,

I could use some recommendations on where to buy oil/filter for my 2013 LR4. I’m a do-it-yourselfer but just for reference, I reached out to some of the local British mechanics here (SF Bay Area) to see what they are charging… ~$250 ouch

This car is replacing a 4Runner where I bought Amazon 5W-30 conventional oil for $17 (5qrts) and a filter for $5. With the LR4, 3-figure oil change costs are quite the shocker compared to what I’m used to.

I intend to continue to change my own oil but could use this forum’s help on the following:

a.) what weight oil is needed (5W-20?), I understand LR requires a specific certification. Is there any particular brand you are utilizing?
b.) where do you recommend buying the oil and filter and what price should I expect to pay?
c.) do you recommend pump method or drain n fill?

Thank you!

I use 81/2 qts 5-20W Royal Purple at 5,000 mile intervals. I buy filters, either thru ebay or rockauto. Prices will vary. AZ, ORielly, and Advance at $50-$65 per filter last check. I have bought name brand filters for $17 ea. I remove skid plate and sump drain every time. That way I can check for leaks. Hope this helps. Mine has 112,000 Miles and have owned 11 yrs, second owner. Still around $100-$125, half of most shops.

I think most of us use an extraction pump (mityvac) and do the entire oil change topside. easiest change i’ve ever done. i use liquidmoly in my 2016 (which has the lr certification), but plenty of people just use whatever good quality synthetic they like without much regard to the lr certification. I can’t believe the certification makes much difference, but to each his own opinion on that subject.
