Default Edited - It was not the tranny *** COMPLETE TRANNY FAIL at 56K 2018 Discovery TD6 ***

I am so sadden to write this, but it happened to me - 3 weeks into ownership and 1600 miles in, I did not even get permanent tags, and now this - "Transmission Fault" on dash, Check Engine/MIL, codes P215B and P174E, engine free revs on D and R, need to tow 200miles $$$, and now shop called be back with "took a sample of tranny oil, fully black with visible metal debris..."
I did not think about this, but now I am thinking it - "maybe I should not have bought this car"...

https://landroverforums.com/forum/ne...ck-out-113480/ - looking to buy thread

https://landroverforums.com/forum/ne...ux-td6-115999/ - new owner thread

https://landroverforums.com/forum/ne...evs%85-116031/ - total tranny fail... Perhaps car was abused as a loaner (first 6K miles) or by first (48k miles) owner, and now I am supposed to literally pay for it... On the other hand, cars are meant to be driven - what gives?...tranny fail with only 56K - C'mon Land Rover, you should do better than that?...
It just sucks

my 12 year old daughter told me, "daddy, they scammed you" - and yeah, I kinda have to agree with her... (speechless)

Wow - sorry to hear about the transmission failure.

I would note that on my observation reading these forums over the past decade, transmission issues like this are extremely rare on Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles. And while it's nice to blame the 'unreliable land rover' - they all use the ZF8 transmission built in Germany which is used in many high performance and luxury marques incl across the BMW range, Alfa, Audi, many Jeeps, Chrysler, Aston Martin, Dodge, Rolls etc

Do they have any idea why it failed? It's used in much higher performance vehicles without issue, so unfortunately sounds like it may have been abused as you suggest.

What are you getting as quotes for replacement? And can you consider one from a. Breakers yard?

8k total from Independent shop (6k rebuild tranny form Land Rover, and labor 2k).
I am pushing selling dealer to cover half as it’s only been 3 weeks, but they want the car in their hands… arranging another tow today. So tired to deal with tows, estimates, calls…

If only 3 weeks I would be very suspicious. Seems like too much of a coincidence. Wonder if the seller knew something was wrong and offloaded it quick.. worth pursuing selling dealer for some level of support. Sorry to hear the hassles

I'm glad the dealer that sold it to you is in some sort of discussion with you, that's something. I'm pulling for you, as I'm sure are many of us here on the forum.

In the state of Minnesota for example all used cars have a 3000 mile three month warranty is required by the state. Even if they don’t advertise it

Update - to give credit to LR - it was not the tranny. The dealer where car was traded in and then sold me the car, they had replaced the left rear axle part of the pre-sale inspection. I had no idea at the time that they replaced an axle. After long discussions and me describing the symptoms and codes, they agreed to look at the car. I think they sensed the problem could be the axle tripping codes, and sure enough that was it - to this day I am not sure if axle was tripping some wheel sensor which was throwing the output shaft/vehicle speed correlatoin codes and putting tranny is come safe more, or axle was truely somehow popped out which will explain the free revving. I an thankful to selling dealer who basically admitted their fault saying "axle was faulty or incorrect part", they replaced the axle along with the rear diff fluid and covered all costs.
Just a lot of frustrations and 5 longs weeks, but in the end my disco is back on the road

" now shop called be back with "took a sample of tranny oil, fully black with visible metal debris..."
How did changing the axle fix this?

I think this TP dealer, not knowing about the axle change and/or faulty part or just installation errors, and seeing car revving on D but not moving assumed it was the tranny, and then to back it up said there was glitter. The mini dealer took oil sample, they said oil was black but did not say they saw metal pieces. For 56k, they said it was normal wear and tear, and I want o believe them. I mean, the tranny shifts flawless.

I questioned the decision of the bad tranny simply by the error codes - output shaft/vehicle speed correlation - which to me means, something is not right past the tranny and before going to ground, I honestly thought was transfer case.

i am personally changing transfer case and tranny fluids, and will post an update here.

I really want to believe my tranny is fine
