I'm going with this combo: 67 Designs Carbon Fiber Arm + Universal Aluminum Squeeze Device Holder mounted to a RAM Mount Seat Tough-Wedge. The Tough-Wedge squeezes between the center console and driver seat.

Reason why I went this direction is because I used to use vent mounts but I've found that it's caused issues with the lifespan of my phone battery. Supposedly fluctuating hot/cold temps for phone batteries cause premature wear and I found that my iPhone 6 battery crapped out after 1 year. I'm also not a fan of suction cup mounts on the windshield because it inhibits vision and would get annoying to remove every time I wanted to put up a sun shade.

Pretty happy with this 67 Designs + RAM Mount combo. It's very secure and I can mount and dismount my phone with one hand. Perhaps the only downside of this is that having the phone in this location does block your view from seeing the HVAC dials on the dashboard but I find this a minor inconvenience since you can still access these controls via the infotainment system.

 

Okay, I pulled the trigger and just bought one to see how it works. So far, so good on a 8" Samsung Galaxy S2 tablet. I wouldn't recommend this as a solution while offroading, but driving, going over speed bumps, etc. it has worked quite well. I might end up putting a piece of something soft on the bar right next to the aluminum to prevent rubbing, but so far it has stayed strong enough not to fall into the wall.

It is, the MagicMount that plugs into the cigarette lighter port. Just tried the tablet rotated 90deg. and worked great too.
