When my trial expired that wouldn't work for me, which led me to subscribe and then it still wouldn't work which led me to a month of BS including 14 days at the dealer to get it all working. But the problem wasn't hotpsotting it was something else that eventually required a new telematics unit.
I bet the phone hotspot would work well now but I am afraid to take my sim card out at this point!

Doesn't sound like you need to touch the car's SIM if you create the hotspot on your phone and connect to it with the car's wifi. I gotta try it.

Ned, Jack's right that you don't have to touch your SIM. You can turn off 'Mobile Data' to disable it (under 'Connectivity').

It connects automatically. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether 'Mobile Data' (aka the car's SIM) need to be toggled off for it to do so. I can play around with that and try to get a definitive answer.
