My dealer installed "Apex Protect" tracker subscription that was included with my '18 D5 is expiring soon. I figured I'd take a stab at tracking it down. I didn't see anything that stood out under the driver side kick panel under the dash, so I moved over to the passenger side. Pulled up the passenger front carpet and...
Gotcha. Tucked behind the passenger carpet in the center console.
The installer made sure to do an super-professional install. This was originally wrapped in super-sticky fabric tape. (eyeroll)
Cut the soldered-on power wire and re-wrapped the main power lead in several layers of self-vulcanizing rubber tape.
All wrapped up and back together.
After putting everything back together I went for a drive and almost immediately got a vehicle movement alert from the tracker app. So I guess I found the tracker the *original* dealer installed. The FCC ID of the black box indicates it is manufactured by Lo-Jack. Neat. I've done a bit more research and the Apex tracker is typically piggybacked off the OBD port. They must've done a pretty good job hiding it. I'll post an update when I find it.
Apparently the guy that installed this one went to the same school as the last.
Wrapped up and ready to put back together.
The huge insult of this tracker is that the harness that's supposed to come with it has an OBD Y cable that allows it to be installed without any cutting at all. Thanks.
