Default 3 Months Left on Warranty

Folks,

I have about three months left on my factory warranty. My car has been great, save the covered rear differential replacement (and much appreciation to this forum for helping diagnose the sound which the dealer "couldn't replicate" until I made they ride with me). I'm 50/50 on getting an extended warranty, but given the rear differential replacement (and a known trouble spot), I'm inclined not to. I may separately get an electronics warranty, which is pretty inexpensive through AAA and covers things that can be fantastically expensive.

But the reason for this posting is to ask other members what they did as a final check towards the end of their warranty. It will be due for an oil change about the same time. Still, part of me is thinking about having my local indy (very reputable, have used for years with previous LRs) give it a comprehensive once-over in the event they find anything that the dealer may overlook (small leaks etc), and I can try to have it tackled. Any thoughts would be great.

It all depends on how long you plan to keep the vehicle. (Meaning miles, not years)

My point of reference is our LR4 that we kept until 200K miles because we did not like the Discovery 5. The first 100K miles went by with minimal issues. But I'm guessing we spent over $10K on repairs and maintenance between 100K and 200K miles. Much was wear & tear items like suspension bushings, upper and lower control arms, seized brake calipers, failed parking brake, new air suspension compressor, new steering rack, valve cover oil leak that killed the alternator. Plus some preventative things like replacing all the plastic coolant lines before they cracked and crumbled, killing the engine.

If you plan to go 100K miles, I'd skip the warranty and pay as you go. If going past 100K miles, consider an extended warranty.

It comes down to money. People who have a lot of money don't worry much about future repairs, they may even pay cash for the car upfront. People like me though who have a tight budget need the protection of a good exclusionary extended warranty for a vehicle like this which is prone to all kinds of expensive failures.

That is, if they really want to keep the car long-term.

If I really wanted to still be driving one of these I'd either be leasing it or trading it in after 4 years at which point there shouldn't be any negative equity to roll into a new one. The factory warranty being 4years/50k works out fairly well for most people timing-wise to trade up and not get stung on negative equity for a 6 year finance. Your call but again for people on tight budgets I don't consider these to be drive it until the wheels fall off types of vehicles like what I'm driving now for example (Honda Passport Trailsport with the V6). The Honda can be kept longer-term even on a tight budget.

That's my two cents, if you have a lot of money keep the car, drive it, enjoy it, but if not then you'll probably want to carefully consider your options.

I have thought about this same thing as my warranty is up Jan 2025.

Sort of a "what can I break before then".

Honestly I can't come up with anything. I do plan on running it through the dealer in the month before expiry to check for oil leaks, coolant leaks that sort of thing. And maybe tell them about "a clunk in the front" suspension at low speeds over speed bumps, in hopes they find some worn bushings (this I know from my LR4 days haha).

Otherwise mine has been pretty bullet proof these past few years.

The issue with going over 100k miles and getting an extended warranty is that very few companies offer a warranty extending beyond 100k or 120k miles. Is anyone aware of any companies offering extended warranties up to 200k miles?

May I ask what the rear differential issue was? I am two months from warranty expiration and feel like I hear thumps and creeks in the drivetrain over the past year/. The care has been great, service / dealership not so great - and fear owning this thing off warranty.

I just posted an update on another thread (below) about this issue. The sounds and vibration I was hearing from the rear matched a TTB and well-known LR issue. After lots of back-and-forth with the dealer, and their help to advocate for the issue with corporate, the rear diff was replaced under warranty.

thank you! I am sure the dealer will claim the can never replicate this. May be easier to sell….

I’m at 40K with my 2023 110 and annoyed at the constant coolant level light coming on, with the coolant just slightly under full. Ignoring a coolant light is not a habit I think I want to cultivate. Taking it in to service with a “fix this or else” attitude. Last time service said “no leaks and hey they use coolant you know.” Yesterday the AC repeated its new trick of not working during my commute. Last time service said “oh that’s the software.” Which just updated over the past weekend. Little problems but enough to make me think this is not a long term relationship. Rant mode off.
