Default 300Tdi remove ignition barrel help please

At last my ignition barrel has given up the ghost. Key wont work at all. My plan is to simply remove the barrel (just the barrel) and then remove bits from the mechanism so the key will turn. Appreciate this lowers the security of the vehicle to zip but so be it!
It appears that the barrel is held in by a brass pin that you can see from the back (front side of car) with a mirror. It has 4 small dents around the alloy on the side which appear to keep it in place.
Question..If I dremel off the small dints will the pin come out and the barrel be released??? (with the key in the aux position of course)

All the above wil save me getting a whole new assembly.

There was a thread several months ago where another redneck used a hammer and screwdriver to remove his.

Have you taken the plastic covers off (top and bottom of steering column)?

It's all pretty accessable if you do.

I just had mine apart replacing the headlight switch, look at the link inmy signature and look at my latest album, you will find some good pics of it opened up.

Danny,
Yes I have the covers removed and it certainly looks like the pin I refer to holds the key barrel in. I would like to remove just the barrel and not the whole assembly. I think this pin holds it in but would like to hear others views or experiences before I go ahead. I plane to remove the offending sliders and then replace the barrel.

harro,

This is a pretty easy repair if you follow the instructions in the thread Spike gave you, I did it this weekend and took less than an hour to do. Now my key turns smooth and no more jiggling....

Great big thanks to all of you. Problem solved. Just followed the advice in the link Spike posted above and followed the instructions. Ended up taking a few brass sliders out of the lock and grinding a few others back to flush with the barrel. Saved $600 on the part alone.
Too easy...
