Looks almost as bad as mine did before the rebuild. It'll be interesting to open her up in a couple years and see what it looks like running Rotella from day 1.

ughhhhhh what a messss. me and the street are covered in oil. there's no way you can direct the oil pouring out into the canister. i broke the new filter wrench inside of 5 minutes and struggled but got everything off. you guys are awesome. never thought id be doing this.

i like it. now i need to deal with the oil separator but can't find it for the moment.

i think the mechanic cleaned it out well when he did the gaskets. so I agree, it will be interesting to see what regular rotella changes will do for it. it'll be funny if I get to comment on this thread in two years.

Travelor.....sorry I totally highjacked your thread. I'll (try to) make this my last post here, but.....everything all in all went well.

I go on about not much here:

Yeah there is, you need the right type of drain pan for one, 2 hold the empty drain pan upto the drain plug right before you take it out and catch the stream of oil.
Then use logic and calculate where the oil stream is going to move to as it gets weaker and move the drain pan accordingly.
And remember this, practice makes perfect.

You'll get it with practice.

I unthread it to the last thread. Then gripping it from above, and pushing it in to prevent it popping off and oil spilling out, I very slowly remove it, letting the oil fall downward at a controlled rate. After a few seconds I remove it fully and set it aside. No fishing for it. No oil everywhere. No ramps needed. Easy trick once you get it.

Man, the EPA will be circling the block in those dark SUVs... buy big drain pan, use it to pour into disposal jug(s). Keep pan and use it to soak parts in, etc. About 18 inch across.
