Do the slots go top and bottom? Or on the sides?

Spent part of yesterday installing my new +2" shocks and FJ lift, in the process I discovered this.

Ripped that garbage out after I stopped laughing.

I pulled out the dash to repair the spider unit only to find I don't have to repair ... then tested and retested the coil .... still no start .. oh and put the battery back on charge

Slots go top and bottom. People have drilled holes in their stock brushings with good results but the bushings don't last. I expect the orange dynamic Polys to hold up much better.
