Changed the oil with Rotella T 15W-40 and one of those massive Purolator filters. All went reasonably well. Got everything done and buttoned up before that massive black rain cloud arrived. Got the filter and oil online from Amazon delivered to the house. That's sweet. Guess, I'll need to re-order as I plan to change the oil again at 500-1,000 miles. Then every 3,000 thereafter.

Thanks

My hood cable release **** broke off and left a plastic end. Using vice-grips to open it now. Anyone replaced the cable before and have any tips before I go the trial and error route. Thanks.

In the Discovery I Forum the third thread is the "Discovery Series I Tech Section". It's a sticky thread. So, it will be at the top. Open the third post in that thread titled "Engine Oil and Filter" which was kindly provided by RoverMasterTech. It will answer all your questions about the oil and oil filter. RoverMasterTech even provides pictures which I find very useful.

Filter L40316, 8 quarts. The truck takes 7 and you'll need to fill the oil filter before connecting. The filter took probably a quart. When I was done with the oil change, I had a 1/2 quart +/- left over. Also, use some cardboard or similar behind the oil filter when you screw it off. The cardboard will direct the oil into your oil catch pan and away from the surrounding truck parts. (Got that from another thread and can't remember who posted it.) When you remove the side mounted oil drain plug, the oil will shoot out sideways. So, if your catch pan is directly below the drain plug, the initial gush of oil will overshoot the catch pan. I had a fairly wide and open pan and caught most of the gush. Had it not been for the extra large size, I would have dumped a quart or two of oil onto my gravel drive before I could have re-positioned the catch pan. Fortunately, my Truck had been sitting for several hours and the oil that got on my arm moving the pan was not hot.

Default Junkyard score!

Went to the junkyard for a sun visor clip. Found a couple and also some solid steel lug nuts laying in the back of a RRC.
I was worried that I'd get raped when the guy asked me what the nuts were from and I told him a Land Rover. Nope.
$2.46 for everything!!!

I went to a pick and pull 3-4 months back before purchasing my Discovery and they had a 97 Discovery that I wish I would have combed through. It's gone now. Oh well, I'll wait for the next one to arrive fingers crossed.
