Changed oil as last owner had put Synthetic in. Changed plugs for correct NGK's. Tried to make the 'Hood' look presentable as the laquer is peeling off...

Did you change the oil because it was the wrong weight or because it was synthetic?

I run Schaeffer 5w40 full synthetic in my 1996 Discovery. Currently at 225,000 miles on the original engine.

Came across one of these...finally. Hard to find in decent shape. What I don't have are the original nuts that keep it on the spare. Any suggestions on alternatives or does anyone happen to have a set lying around the garage.

I'm fortunate to still have my original cover. Nuts are as pictured.

Rover's North appears to have them here:

NUT M16 SPARE WHEEL REAR MOUNT, MXC7887 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts

There is also a clear plastic washer behind the nut. The following claims to be for the Defender, but it looks like the same washer I have on my D1.

WASHER SPARE WHEEL DEFENDER & DISCOVERY, MXC7335 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts

<EDIT>
Actually the URL also says Discovery, so I think you're good to go with this!

You are very lucky! Mine went missing from my garage... So mad the day that happened. And my fabric cover fell off in a car wash.
