Default 6/8 Update

Finally made some good progress this weekend. Had a friend come down and we knocked out the following in about 8 hours:
  1. Oil pickup and pan
  2. Heads and new head gaskets
  3. New tappets and rods
  4. Rocker assemblies and valve covers
  5. Lower intake
  6. One side of the headers
Still to do (I need more parts) is to finish the oil sump assembly, front crankshaft seal and the right side header. I also found out the oil drain plug threads are stripped. Any recommendations on how to repair?

Run a tap through the threads to start with, then torque the plug down and see if it will accept a little torque. Don't need much for the drain plug. If it won't you probably will need to helicoil.

Loving all these hi-res pics and the progress! Mind shedding some light on what threads you've attached your hoist leveler to on the back of the engine?
I see the front very clearly and was planning on using the same threads when pulling out my old 4.6. Just struggling to find a good mounting point for the rear of the engine.

Sure thing! See close ups of back and front.

Back mounting points.

Front mounting points.

I updated my cost/build sheet to reflect additional part and tool costs I have incurred. You can access the spreadsheet by clicking on this link which will take you to a Google Sheet: Cost/Build Sheet

Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

Default 6/22 Update

Made a bit more progress on the rover today. Installed the secondary air intake and the headers and also tapped out the oil drain plug. Also repaired the melted transfer case vent tubing and the broken fuel line quick disconnect. Still need to remove the old radiator to make room to put the engine in and I need to put the harmonic balancer in. After that I should be good to go to drop the engine in place. Planning on getting the engine in place July 4 weekend.

Fun 🤬

Drilling out the broken stud.

Old harmonic balancer.

Used harmonic balancer off eBay. Marginally better shape.

Default 7/4 Update

Slow going. Finally got the exhaust stud drilled out and replaced after going through 2 drill bits and 2 taps. It’s not perfectly straight but I will make it work. Also repaired the fuel line quick disconnect and the three breather tube that had melted. Also mounted the harmonic balancer. Used the method from Atlantic British which suggested using an impact driver instead of a torque wrench. Also removed the radiator to make room for the engine. Goal is to get the engine mounted tomorrow!

Breather tube repaired.

Default 7/5 Update

Made some progress today but near as much as I wanted to. I spent about 4 hours lining up, lowering and re-adjusting as I attempted to get it in place. I was hoping to get the top 4 bolts attached to the bell housing but I just haven’t been able to get it line up. So I am bailing for today and will give it a shot again tomorrow morning.

1 ton harbor freight will work if you remove the plastic cover on the bumper and the radiator plus add a swivel hook to the crane.

This is a cool thread to follow. I am now adding garage to the absolute list of next house items.
