Default 97 discovery II, burning oil

Please forgive me if this question has already been asked, could not find one that matched my situation.

1997 Land Rover Discovery II
4.0 liter
87K miles

Bought my Rover 2 years ago and love it. The previous owner had just replaced the head gasket. It did smoke very little from tail pipe when I bought it. I have a cabin up in the Ozark Mountains. I noticed from the start, I would have to add 2 quarts of oil when I got up there, 2 hour drive, and 2 quarts when I returned home. Now it is smoking pretty good , still only adding 2 quarts oil on my trip to the cabin.

While trying to figure out my loss of oil, there is something I can't wrap my head around. When up on the mountain, I engage the differential and the smoking stops. The whole time riding up there , no smoke. When I leave and disengage , smoke again.

Also, when driving around in town it wants shift real hard. If I stay on the accelerator when shifting .... it's a normal shift. If I am at a complete stop and take off.... And for some reason if I let off accelerator before it does it's normal shift.. It's a real hard shift.... Almost like I manually slammed it in to low gear at too high rpms.

Thank you in advance for reading my thread .. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated .. I have stopped driving it until I can figure out what could be causing my issues. I really don't want to get rid of her any can't find anyone local that works on them.. They are almost scared when I mention the word Land Rover.

I would suggest you check your PVC system to see if it is working, otherwise its time for a compression test.
I would not be surprise if the valve seals are all cracked and brittle by now.
