An SDR (software defined radio) will be added too, so I can listen to AM, FM, HAM, NOAA weather and other interesting frequencies. As a start I modified an old Alpine radio (front not painted yet) and added some of the factory dials in order to keep the Land Rover look and feel. The steering wheel buttons will work too.

Cool!! Are you using the phone quad processor w/hacked code? or using an add on external processor to drive the screen? or combo?

Nothing hacked, just apps and USB devices connected to the phone. It needs an external device (as USB) that handles the dials and buttons. Projects goes slowly since Disco maintenance and preparation for next tours as well as the tours

Yes, but the Alpine has a preamp only, the actual power amp is under the driver seat.

I really like your idea. I have seen the android USB controllers for games. And of course arduino control via BT or USB from Android device. Now you have me interested in coding an arduino or teensy with AndroidAccessory library and make some button functions via USB to android device...........hmmmmmm

I would love to get an E39 aftermarket retro look nav unit, but a touch too big.....

The first prototype is almost done. All the original dials are working as well as the features of course (see the pictures). I still need to program a few small things like timers. As soon I have time I will install it into the Land Rover and I will post a video.

The modified Alpine stereo sitting on my test bench to test things like speakers, ignition, reverse indication aso.

Backup camera (camera sitting on the table), turns on when Reverse is selected (the "R" switch in the background simulates it).

Yes, you can watch movies too (here Camel Trophy).

Radio receiver, listening to NOAA weather channel.

There's a carousel changer under the passenger seat.
