Aluminum only radiates 2% of its thermal energy, versus steel at about 89%, so the aluminum really drops the heat going in to the u-joint. My very first Disco has a front shaft chirping when I bought it, I was terrified the entire 4 miles driving it home because I knew about the trans destruction. Upon examination of the u-joint I could tell the failure mode was cooked grease.

Regular greasing (via replacement u-joints with zerks) with synthetic grease should give a long service life - probably 150k ish.
