What exactly are you doing when trying to shift over into lock? It helps if you are rolling forward ~5mph in neutral and shifting over.

 

I am just sitting still on flat ground. I have just now gotten the stick to move and I was testing everything

 

The high/low function is the pivoting part of the linkage & you can generally get it operating easily again.

The diff lock (awesome) function is same linkage (basically) only a sliding function and usuallyrequires some afternoon dissassembly then regular use to maintain functionality.

where can I find disassembly instructions? I have an official workshop manual but I can't find where it is in there.

 

I'm not 100% on this but it may require removing the center console, drilling out the rivets holding the transmission blanking plate and going at it from above.
