Trouble with my new Disco II
Hello All,
Looking for some guidance ..
I inherited a 99 disco II from a family member
over Xmas break .. and immediately fell in love with it
.. felt certain i had become a lifetime disco owner ..
but i'm already into the weeds :
towards the end of my normal 45 mile morning commute,
red light catches my eye .. temp in red .. i slow to a crawl and
try to get to an exit .. after crawling abt a mile 'check engine'
light comes on flashing, so i pull straight onto shoulder
.. coolant hissing out of what i think is the lower
intake manifold ... coolant reservoir that was
previously full is now empty -
wait 30 min for car to cool, dump the 16 oz bottled
water i have with me into the reservoir, and ease to next
exit about 0.5 miles further .. walk for coolant .. fill reservoir
.. ease it, 500 yds at a time, to a garage that will look at it
mech replaced a small gasket and cover at the point of leak
and pressure tested it .. says it's building pressure and there's
white smoke in exhaust.. says head gasket is def gone,
and i'd be lucky if that was the only problem
i inherited a code reader with the car .. checked it before
leaving with mech.. it's showing a cyl 4 misfire
as the only code -
i'm not sitting on a pile of money and can't
afford to just keep writing bigger checks as my
mechanic finds more problems, so i'm here to try
to get a sense of what i might have done to the poor
vehicle and when to say uncle on the repairs
.. and what my options are after that
also, looking for info on good disco mechanics nearby -
i live in northern westchester ... work in nj near the george
washington bridge.. commute down palisades parkway
thank you in advance for
advice, information, harangues

sorry to reply to my own post .... been reading.. and it looks like my biggest concern in an
overheating situation is dropping a sleeve.... so what i would like to know, if anyone can
say, is how to tell if i've done this horrible thing .. a mech has it now, but i don't want
to be completely at his mercy .. so i'd like to know if there's anything
i can ask him .. or go over in person and look for ..
thanks again

Sorry to hear about the engine, drain the oil and look to see if there are any metal flakes and its probably mixed with coolant and that will give you a better look at things but other than that the only way to tell is tear the engine apart and find out. been there done that and here are a few pictures of the disaster that i bought. Its never good to give a car to a mechanic when you don't know what needs doing and before you get quotes, i don't trust mechanics and im only 17 hah
These are the pictures of my oil pan with the pistons i had to remove to turn the engine over

And its never good when you see this in your oil pan
