Default 2005 LR3 Key wont turn in the ignition

I have 2 keys and neither will turn the ignition from position 0 to position 1. When i insert the key and open the door it says "key in ignition" but, no clicking sound or anything. I have fiddled with it for 5 or so minutes wiggling the key and turning the wheel left to right with no luck. I just drove the truck yesterday and it was fine. I have never had any issues with the ignition. Its almost like it doesnt recognize my keys but, it says "key in ignition" Im lost here.

Any ideas on what to do next? Sad part is I cant even get the truck into neutral to have it towed somewhere.

Maybe squirt a little graphite and a tap on the metal part where you insert the key? Could be a stuck tumbler.

Tried that Geo. No luck. Shouldn't there be some type of relay click when I insert the key? I get nothing.

I am wondering if this would work https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ock-fix-35422/ It seems to be for the Discovery series so not sure about this fix for the LR3.

Message TomR. He had the same problem. He started a thread about as well. Search in advanced under LR3 and his user name.

I talked to TomR and we had the same issue. Apparently the cylinder over time gets all gunked up and wont turn. Both of our solutions were to lubricate it via poking the straw down into the cylinder. I used some brake cleaner as well. There was all kinds of nasty black crud dripping out of the hole. It eventually broke lose and the key switched on. The first time I did it I sprayed just a little lube into the key hole then I sprayed alot of brake cleaner and then some more lube into the hole. I suspect I will be cleaning it again in the near future and will always keep a can of cleaner/lube in the car.

hope this helps

Thank you so much for the reply. I was able to find Tom R.’s thread on what he did to his ignition we have the lubricant on standby, just need to pick up some brake cleaner. I know Tom R removed his key barrel from the steering column, I’m hoping we can get some resolution without that step (not sure if you removed yours). I’ll keep report back after we try it. Thanks again!

I did not remove my barrel from the steering column, just filled it full of cleaner and lubricant. I had planned on removing it but, it broke free before I got that far.

Good luck!
