Not sure if anyone's posted this, or if anyone cares, but Sams Club has a 6-1 gallon box/case for about $75 (about $12.50 per gallon) and a 2-2.5 gallon box for $60 (about $12 per gallon). My truck takes about 1 1/2 gallons (maybe a tad less), so that comes to about $19 and $18 per oil change respectively, not including filter. That's the cheapest I've been able to find. Before that I was paying $15 per gallon at Tractor Supply which is now second cheapest. That is all.

Just thought I'd throw my results out there. Took the advice on the larger Mann filter and rotella t6 fully synthetic 5w40, wanted thicker but that's all I could find at Wally world, auto zone and pep boys in the area.
Results: (no scientific testing here)
With a mix of mostly highway, some city and a little desert off roading.
I've noticed a quieter engine with no ticking, smoother startup and idle and cleaner dipstick.
Lots more leakage lol.
Overall happy with the change. I'm about 2500 miles into the oil/filter change. 115,000 mikes or so on the clock. 04 g4. Had to add about half a quart in the first 1000 miles. But so far level staying put. Did notice a drop in mileage. Was getting 13.5 MPG, now can only Mister about 12mpg.
Does the medium size filter net any less oil leakage?
Great thread by the way and thanks for the info.
Going for 4k mile intervals. To me 3k is excessive and 5k pushing it. JMOP. Done it in the past and seemed to work well on the 15 or so cars I've owned in the past.

Default oil type

I am getting ready to change the oil in a truck I just got after I finishing getting rid of a coolant leak. I was prepared to get the 15w40 Rotella. However, I don't have the diesel engine and I live in East TN where it does not stay cold but can get down in the 20s in the winter at times and the teens overnight. Will that be too cold for the heavy weight oil? I do plan on using one of the larger filters like the Mann or something similar.

If I'm not mistaken Rotella 5w-40 will be rated for lower temperatures so you could also use that. The 15w-40 will probably hold up though. Do you get consistent winters with snow? Where I live in NC i can pretty much stick to 15w-40 all year round. We get some snow but it doesn't usually every drop into the teens or single digits.

By the way have any of you guys been running Mobil 1 Delvac 15w-40? I've been running it and I'd say it's quite comparable to Rotella if some of you have limited selections.

Well we don't usually have snow here in the valley for very long. Now the mountain is another story lol. However we can have several days where it might be in the 20's and in the teens at night so I am coming out to go to work and it might be 18-28 degrees. Not that it happens often but it does occur. I am not wild about using the synthetic because the engine being higher mileage does leak a little oil and it seems wasteful to spend that much if I am willing to change the regular oil regularly. I may be wrong about that but the budget for synthetic is tough when you change it at 3-4,000 miles.

with the temps being in the teens at night here I don't like how long it takes for the oil light to go off in the morning with the 15/40 rotella so guess i need to goto a 10/40 or 5/40 just want to go with a decent filter i have been using the fram ph8a which I gather is not the greatest but i also want a larger capacity filter

Fram oil filters suck.
NAPA 151515 (I might have one to many "1"'s or "5"'s in there, but just look for the oil filter with all 1's and 5's)is the larger filter for your truck and its a good filter, its made by WIX, which also uses that same part number.
Somebody will correct me.
