Default u joint or transmission

I need help I just bought a landrover discovery, as I was driving , it made like a slapping noise at first I thought it was a flat tire but then when I stop at stop sign, it wouldn't go . I had it towed home, it won't stay in gear have to put e-break on. but it works in four wheeldrive. one person told me u-joint ( the tow truck driver) a friend of mine thinks its a transmission. Also where would I be able to get parts I live in Zanesville, Ohio

Transfer gearbox lever should be firmly in the "H" position. That is the small gear shift thing forward of the main P-R-N-D-3-2-1 selector. If seldom used, can be pretty stiff. A complete owner manual and shop manual is contained in the free download called the RAVE. Stands for Rover Automated Viewing Environment, but IMHO it should be Rover's A'int Very Economical.

Inspection under the truck is important. The front drive shaft from the factory did not have enough grease fittings and depended on sealed storage of the grease. When it is baked out by heat from the catalytic converters, the U-joints can snap without warning and slap a hole in the transmission which will cost on the order of $7000 at a dealer. Rebuild in advance article in our tech area, https://landroverforums.com/forum/ge...rebuild-29302/ , about $100, or buy after market shaft. Parts can be had from many parts stores, plus a number of on-line Rover specialty sites.

There is also a rubber flex coupling at the rear shaft to differential. If anything fails that disconnects power from one drive shaft, the system tries to put more power where there is no load, and no forward motion is the result.

You really need to crawl under and inspect this front shaft and the rear coupler. A Rover is simple enough for most DIY repairs, but good indy shops also exist.

Have someone start the truck and put it in drive while you look under the truck at both drive shafts, the one that is spinning is hooked to a failed diff.
Let me know what you find.

usually a driveshaft ujoint that fails on those slaps the transmission and destroys both. Crawl underneath and look for the extent of damage. or take a picture.
