Default Major 60k Mile Service - Revised

Hey, guys. This is just an updated version of Mike's original major service thread. It's been a great post, but there's a couple things I feel should be changed. This is just a modified copy/paste of this original thread (sticky). Feel free to throw in below other changes you think should be made.

For those of you buying a used vehicle with 60K or more on it, consider doing the full list to bring your truck current. Also repeat this service every 60k miles. Write ups have been linked as I can find them.
  • 1 Oil filter
    • Mobil 1- 301 (most expensive, best quality)
    • Wix 51515XP (synthetic material, almost as good as the Mobil)
    • Wix 51515 (traditional material)
    • Napa Gold 1515 (same filter as Wix 51515. Still a very good filter, my pick)
  • 1 Factory air filter
  • 2 gallons of engine oil
    • In cold climates (below 0*F) use Rotella T6 5w40.
    • In moderate climates (below 40*F), use a blend.
      • 1 gal Rotella 5w40
      • 1 gal Rotella 15w40
    • In hot climates (above 40*F) use Rotella 15w40.
    • I have also heard good things about Rotella SAE30, but have not personally tried it myself.
  • 3 gallons of Dextron 3 or higher ATF, use in both transmission and power steering system.
  • 1 Transmission filter
  • 2 gallons of 80/90W synthetic gear oil
  • 2 Brass Differential fill plugs
  • 1 quart of DOT 3 Brake fluid
  • 3 Gallons of mixed green coolant. NOT DEXCOOL.
  • 1 Can of MAF Cleaner
  • 1 Can of Brake Cleaner or Carb Cleaner
  • 8 Double Platinum Spark Plugs - anything but Bosch. I prefer NGK. Cheap copper plugs will work fine, but you'll only get about 20k miles from them.
  • 1 Set of spark plug wires. 7mm works fine, but if you want 8mm then Magnacor, STI, or Kingsbourne 8mm are good.
  • 1 Serpentine belt
  • 2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
  • 1 Thermostat
    • If using the in-line modification, use a 180* thermostat for Small Block Chevy. Recommended upgrade.
    • I no longer recommend using any version of the factory thermostat.
60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased
Some of these write ups are old and the image links are now dead.
  • ABS Option B Bypass recommended. - Brake bleed will be necessary.
  • Bleed the brakes
  • Service the transmission
  • Change the thermostat. In-line thermostat is highly recommended.
  • Clean your MAF with MAF cleaner, with the sensor unplugged. Only spray, to not brush the sensor.
  • Clean the throttle body and Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) with brake cleaner.
  • Change oil in both differentials as well as replacing the plastic fill plugs with brass plugs
  • Change oil in the transfer case
  • Replace the spark plugs and wires
  • Replace the air filter
  • Replace the serpentine belt
  • Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting, including the 2 slip shafts. Do this at every oil change. Lithium Moly Grease recommended.
  • Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings, ball joints, and wheel bearings etc.
  • Rebuild or Replace the front drive shaft if it only has 1 grease fitting - HIGHLY IMPORTANT.
A few other things you may want to consider.

What's the intent?

Are you proposing LRF whack the old version or just add this?

I don't expect the old will get replaced or that this will get added. If it does, great, but otherwise I'm just compiling my own version. I disagree with a couple things in Mike's version and I think there are a couple things it's missing.

No real intent to speak of. Just trying to find ways to better help people out. I'm still editing on this, too. This isn't final draft.

Nice work, Alex. This makes much more sense than the original list and helps with stuff everyone asks about - filters and fluid types, etc.

I've copied Disco_Mike's original 60K list he had on here and added it to my iPhone's "Notes" app.
Just like Alex_M did, I continue to "refine" the original list by adding part numbers, oil viscosity weight, torque specs, cost of parts and where to buy the parts.

I was thinking about posting my list but I didn't want to get into a long drawn out discussions about why did I use X-brand of oil instead of Y-brand of oil or using A-brand of filter instead of B-brand filter.

So you are suggesting that the oil pump be replaced every 60k?
