i installed a new block heater for those days she is under the carport rather than in the warm garage.
it is an inline heater that slips into the lower radiator hose warms the coolant and thus the block for cold starts
Pulled the valve covers on my "spare engine" and did an happy dance, will be doing small maintenance this spring. Push rods may also be new.
They look brand new
As well I found significant fouling of the lower manifold heater pipe and front water block water entrances with RTV. The shop suspected a failed block bit it may be simpler just restricted water passages (that would be nice bonus). Unfortunately the shop is very familiar with these engines so my be is they are right.
I haven’t driven Myrtle much of anywhere since changing the oil during the Tier 3 lockdown in December. This morning I started to recondition and trickle charge the battery with the CTEK XS 7000 charger since it will be sitting again even more during our Tier 4 UK lockdown.

Changed the gear oil in both diffs and the transfer case. At 160K I'm not sure if the rear was ever done by the looks of the gunk that came out and was attached to the drain plug. Probably about half an inch or more sludge attached to the plug...not sure what that is going to lead to later. Front diff was pretty clean but the truck had its front diff replaced by the dealer during its lifetime. The transfer case seemed clean but a little low. Messy but I'm glad it's done!

A fine crown of material on the plug is normal. The ring and pinion are probably the two largest gears in the entire drivetrain...and handle a great deal of stress and pressure...so, wear is inevitable. A fine or somewhat spiky crown of material will appear on plug during change, especially the first. Unless you are seeing chunks or strips of material...nothing to be alarmed about.
Finally got the sliders/steps done and installed.
overall very happy with them. Not the best time of year doing this in Maine. Will have some adjusting to do in spring when it’s warmer out.
