Performed the Coin/Ash Tray fix ... it did require two zip ties as that spring can pop just one. So simple, but so satisfying.

Rotated the tires with my son. This beast will be his when he turns 16 so time for him to learn. Also, changed the oil and filter, finished up the new lights and tidied up the cables for the new winch.

 

Next father/son project, show him how to redress winch cable. Not a bad practice to develop. Most manufacturers recommend mildly stretching the cable initially, before being put into service. Usually hook cable to a tree, back away paying out line, stop when l have three or four wraps of cable still around winch drum, put trans in neutral, gently/lightly apply parking brake and start slowing winching truck towards tree. Making sure the line feeds through the fairlead smoothly and evenly. Usually lubracate the cable as l go. Having a well-dressed winch line keeps it from creating flat spots on the cable, from over lapping cable issues.

^^Fantastic advice, something that is usually overlooked and a great way to inspect your line to ensure that you won't have any surprises when you need your winch the most.

Speaking of surprises....wife was driving her green disco and one of the heater hoses exploded. Luckily not terribly far from home and she was able to get it off the road and turned off before it could overheat. I had a set of heater hoses laying around so I ran out swapped them out and topped off coolant and off she went again. Fortunately this happened once we were back in CO and not in the middle of our drive back west the previous week..

welp, HG in the green one is now toast and it's an internal leak which is a killer. At least the white one is external and is still somewhat serviceable...I guess I'll be doubling down here in the next week or two as soon as I can get some parts ordered..

 

Picked up some Lucas X-Tra Heavy Duty grease (the green stuff) and slapped that into all U-Joints and drive shafts. Found out I need a new rear oil pan grommet while I was doing that. Lastly, put in some Preston Coolant Flush to get a head start on cleaning everything out before doing Extincts’ in-line thermostat swap later this week.

Been looking at every DIY headliner replacement guide/video/discussion under the sun to get prepared for that later on as well. Can’t wait!

Extinct named him Ken after the PO, after 9 hours of riding in back home my wife dubbed the truck “Kenneth.” Which I feel is fitting.

Best paint and interior I’ve seen on a Disco and freshly rebuilt 4.6. Runs like it’s off the showroom floor (plus all the extinct mods!) Looking forward to lots of fun in the near future!

 

May have been the head gasket issue that caused the heater hose to blow. Hopefully, it's a simple head gasket job. 4.0's are pretty resilient.

 

it definitely was the cause of that heater hose failure. The hose was on it's last leg anyways as there was zero cordage visible where the hose blew, completely rotted away over time. Trying to decide if throwing a cam in while I have it apart is worth the extra money, I feel like I'll regret not doing it if I don't as these motors are kind of miserable here at the elevations in CO so any little bit to free up some power seems like a good idea. Ideally I'd pull both motors and bump them to 4.6s with cams but time and money don't allow for that much work on two vehicles esp when they are our dailies currently (or supposed to be).
